The imaginary old-time traveler backing away..! XDD Like, wait, explaining our normal day out loud really does make it sound like a prank with rent and emails.
Excited to read this as it comes out. I have set off on a similar project, specifically focussing on rebuilding governance from constitutional "scratch" using well evidenced proposals and novel organizational strategies. I'd love for your perspective on this work as someone who is considering a similar topic.
Below is the my recommended introduction based on your work, but all the articles on 4DProject.substack.com are nonsequential and make up the constitutional corpus.
My series is def light touch (and I hope it remains that way). Itβs just a funny way of getting us thinking about how weird our world has become π€£
And strangely, I find it really fun to think about the things that could be improved π If my birthday wish of a more fair world came true, what would that look like? π«Άπβ¨
I think the biggest challenge is, just like everything we approach with an intentional design mindset, it's ultimately organic. Think about the evolution of the light bulb, which was invented in the 1800s. It revolutionized not just dependence on gas and fire for illumination, but how we behaved in the dark. Electricity broke the divide between day-night, and we became a 24-hour society. Night was no longer a time to sleep, but a time to be productive and play. Fast forward to radio, which used to have mandatory sign-offs each day; so did television when it arrived. But along came cable, which the FCC didn't regulate, and now you have 24-hour television. Twenty-four-hour amusement that just washes over you. Electric light, radio, television, are all phenomenal innovations; but did they arise out of necessity? (You could probably argue the toss on that, but I think it's 50/50.) Our human behavior adapted to these new technologies, and society changed. Survival goes to the most adaptable; not the "most fit." We have merely adapted in order to survive. Is it possible to redesign a society? I believe it is, if human beings are forced to adapt.
I think youβre right to zoom in on adaptation! Most of these shifts werenβt carefully designed end to end. They started as inventions, then quietly rewired behaviour.
The light bulb didnβt come with a plan for a 24 hour culture. Cable didnβt come with a plan for endless consumption. But here we are. We adjusted because the environment changed.
And yes πβ¦a lot of what we call βprogressβ is optional tech that becomes unavoidable once it scales. Then behaviour follows.
I agree, redesign is possible. It can happen when incentives, defaults, and constraints shift. Of course there are other factors Iβll lightly touch on later in the series π€« π€
Change the environment, and people adapt π«Άπβ¨
Your last four sentences are probably true (I'm not smart enough to know), and if true, your third to last word, if I am reading it right, does not seem to be a positive way forward. I do like your thinking about it being organic. That sounds inviting and hopeful. :)
People donβt change well when they feel pushed. But they do respond when the reality around them shifts and they can see, for themselves, that something else makes more sense.
Itβs the moment when staying the same stops working, or stops feeling right. Thatβs the nudge that becomes organic.
So maybe itβs about creating conditions where people have real options, clear information, and the space to choose differently π«Άπβ¨
Thanks. :) I like your first paragraph. Getting βreality around themβ to βshiftβ is the hill to climb. If it can be done in an organic way the hill is worth it and maybe not as steep or long. Again, thanks. :)
Oh definitely! These are lofty dreams indeed π Change is rarely easy or quick. SYSTEM change is even harder π«£ Keeping hope alive π€π π«Άπβ¨
Thank you for responding!! :) May I ask what word you would replace it with? Your whole comment is insightful. You see and feel something. You see a pattern with light bulbs and radio and TV. And your feelings come out in your word mere (third to last sentence) and when you say, βIs it possible to redesign a society? I believe it is.β Believe is a magic word. :)
Iβm not sure. Sometimes we are βforcedβ to change because to hold fast to the thing behind us isnβt working anymore. Or itβs simply too big to ignore. But βforcedβ feels aggressive, which is what I think didnβt feel good. Maybe itβs βnudged.β Think about people who try to quit smoking. Forcing never works. Gentle pushing is better. Or β¦ feeling scared. Sometimes we have to run toward the fear.
Oh, I like the word nudge. :) I am a big fan of the little nudges that come along in life. And a bigger fan of those who can nudge with patience, skill, and subtlety. Thank you for this exchange. :)
I love this & I'm a Hell Nah too. I can't wait to read all of these posts. I like the way you think & I'm right there with ya.
Wahooo! Love it! π―ββοΈ π«Άπβ¨
My simple and succinct response to your question: "Hell Nah!!" π€ͺ
Bahahaha! I love reading that! I say βHell nahβ too!!! π π«Άπβ¨

Right?!? π€£
Imagine explaining emails π€¨β¦
βyes I sit still and answer invisible letters that arrive instantly and never stopβ π€£

really looking forward to this. I have opinions, naturally :) A reset is long overdue.
Awww thanks! π
Yeah I guess we all have opinions about what should change, eh?! π§
Iβm trying to keep the series light and fun while we dream togetherβ¦
weβll see where we end up π π

You inspire me so much β€οΈ
Oh wow!!!! π€©
I donβt even know what to say π₯Ή
Thank you so so so much! Iβm incredibly grateful for your support π«Άπβ¨
Oooh, looking forward to seeing the entire series!
Seeing the world designed in a new way would be something different to each person I think. Everyone has their idea of an ideal world.
Excited to see what your takes are! β€οΈ
I love this take so much β€οΈ
Youβre so right, everyoneβs version of a better world looks a bit different
I think Iβm just putting mine on the table and hoping it sparks others to imagine theirs too π₯°
Thatβs where it gets interesting for me, all of us building it together in slightly different ways π«Άπβ¨
I'm excited to follow the series! To me, at least--you have some of the best takes on these things. π
Awwww thanks so much Cory! Youβve been such an amazing supporter from early on and I really appreciate it π«Άπβ¨
The feeling is mutual! β€οΈ

Psssst⦠:) Develop your two ideas of organic and nudge. Please. :)
Throwing my two cents inβ¦

Agreed. βForcedβ is probably not the best word choice.
